DeWayne Wise’s fantastic catch in the fifth inning of today’s game against the Tigers, which helped to seal the deal, came at a cost. He separated his right (non-throwing) shoulder, and will miss up to eight weeks. This hurts not because he’s indespensible, but because the Sox were thin at Centerfield BEFORE Wise was hurt. Kenny has already brought reigning Centerfield bust Jerry Owens up from AAA Charlotte, but I expect Brian Anderson to get most of the time from here on
out. Owens has tremendous speed, but as the saying goes: you can’t steal first base. No no no, you have to EARN first base, Jerry. First base is for closers, Jerry.
So there you have it. Unless Sox Super ‘Spect Gordon Beckham can also play Centerfield (and let’s face it, he probably can… while simultaneously riding a unicycle and doing your taxes while whistling “America the Beautiful”) the Sox are going to have to deal. Hopefully it won’t have a big impact, the Sox lineup is pretty strong no matter who bats ninth. I’d like to see Ozzie give utilityman Brent Lillibridge a shot at Center, he’s had a nice couple of games and plays some smart ball.
