Gear Up For White Sox Baseball

Through the First Ten

Well, I’m a football fan first and foremost. So to convert appropriately, we’re one-game through the NFL equivalent of a season, and what do the Sox have to show for it? That’s right, a 5-5 record. Right where they started.

Anyway, I’m a macro-baseball watcher, so I finally feel like I have enough information to make only slightly premature judgments on this season’s team. Let’s take a look at the things I was most worried about coming into this season:

John Danks pitches a strong five innings for the Chicago White Sox vs San Francisco giants

Carlos Quentin — I’m only admitting this now because I didn’t want to seem like a Doubting Thomas… This past offseason, I had serious concerns about whether Carlos Quentin could keep up with the performance he handed in last season. Thankfully, I can admit my mistake: Carlos Quentin is for real. He is the South Side messiah and I will rightfully worship at his feet. Seriously though, the guy already has five homers. Thank God.

Youngsters — Josh Fields is hitting .355, but more importantly, he’s playing a solid defensive Third Base. And as an added bonus, he’s a much better baserunner than I thought. Chris Getz, the new Second Baseman, has been slow to start at the plate, but has played great defense. Also, like Fields, he’s really added an element of speed the Sox were lacking last season. Also, I like Brent Lillibridge. I don’t care what anybody says. The kid can’t hit, but he’s a nice fringe player.

John Danks — This kid is the TRUTH. Through two starts he’s 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA and 13 Ks. His walks are high (seven) but that will disappear as the season wears on. Seriously though, he’s 24 years old. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but… *cough* Cy Young *cough*.

Mark Buehrle — Burls looks re-energized this season. He bounced back from a rough Opening Day start (allowing 3 walks) to beat the Twins in his second start (zero walks). I think his arm will continue to loosen up and he’ll be able to go longer into games, as he’s only logged 11 1/3 innings in his first two starts.

4th/5th Starters — Jose Contreras has looked rough, but I’ll give him some more time. Bartolo Colon has looked awesome… but I’ll give him some more time, too.
