Early-Season Sox and Hitting “300″

Mets v White Sox

Sorry for the lapse in updates… I’ve been really busy between school, work, and Easter-related shenanigans. Because of this, I have been unable to watch many Sox games. However I’ve caught up as much as I can, and I like what I see. The Starting Pitching has been solid. I was worried when I saw the Saturday matchup vs. the Twins. The Sox were sending their 5th starter Bartolo Colon (but 1st in line for the buffet!) against the Twins ace, Francisco Liriano. Liriano has been shaky to start the season, but Colon was flat-out dominant, limiting the Twinkies to three hits over six innings. He could have pitched longer, but Ozzie was right to take it slow with him. Needless to say, if this is what we can expect from our 5th starter, we’re in good shape.

On Sunday, Mark Buehrle followed it up with 6 1/3 innings of 2-hit ball, only allowing one run. The number you always have to look for with Mark is walks and fittingly he allowed zero. These two starts were the keys to winning the Twins series, but we’re gonna need a lot more to keep them down. Gavin Floyd had a poor start today, allowing six earned runs and seven (!) walks in five innings. That’s just bad any way you slice it. Hopefully it’s a blip on the radar, because his first start was really encouraging.

Also encouraging is the White Sox offense. The homers have been flying out of the park, which is nice to see in July but GREAT in April. Dye, Konerko, and Quention all homered today, which included the amazing feat of both Dye and Konerko hitting their 300th home runs in back-to-back at-bats. Someone mentioned it was the first time in baseball history that teammates have hit the century mark (100, 200, 300… etc.) of home runs in the same game. Let alone the same inning. Let alone back-to-back at-bats. Amazing stuff.

Keep rolling!

Studs of the game:

Carlos Quention — 3-for-4 with two homers, three RBIs and a walk.

Dye/Konerko — back-to-back 300th home run hitters combine for 7-of-10 effort with 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

Suckers of the game:

Gavin Floyd — horrible outing.

Zach Miner (DET) — see above, multiply by three.
